Here’s a quick rundown of the most crucial points from our Casper mattress review:

  • Redesigned in May 2016 to include an additional layer of polyurethane foam
  • Consists of four layers for a total thickness of 10 inches
  • One model available
  • Available in six sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king
  • Layered design prevents overheating in memory foam layer
  • 10-year non-prorated warranty
  • Generous return policy
  • Excellent customer service
  • As mentioned earlier, it is not the greatest for side sleepers or for heavier people. Another pretty significant drawback is poor edge support.
  • For whatever reason, the edges of this mattress offer very little support. It is actually pretty easy to accidentally roll right off of the edge of the mattress, which isn’t good. When sitting on the edge, you may feel at risk of toppling off as well.
  • Another problem is that only one version of this mattress is available. Most other mattress companies offer an array of options, but Casper gets around this by claiming that their mattress is “perfect for everyone.” It isn’t, so the fact that there’s only one model to choose from is a liability. Thanks to the return policy, however, it’s worth a shot.

The company

These days, there are more online mattress options than ever. How does the Casper mattress stack up to the competition? Launched in 2014, they quickly rose to prominence due to the Casper company’s extensive marketing efforts.

Casper bills its mattress as being “perfect for everyone” and “universally comfortable,” but that is a bit of a stretch. However, the mattress falls comfortably in the middle in terms of firmness, which suggests that it should appeal to a broad array of people.

Casper Mattress

For a mattress, Casper is very affordable. For an online foam mattress, however, its pricing is fairly standard. Here’s what you will pay for different sizes:

  • Twin – $500
  • Twin XL – $600
  • Full – $$750
  • Queen – $850
  • King – $950
  • California King – $950

Ordering Casper online?

Like many people, you may be a bit wary of ordering a mattress online without having the benefit of trying it out.

Most online mattress companies offer trial periods, and Casper is no exception.

Their trial period or return policy is especially generous when compared with many competitors. You can return the mattress at any time within 100 days of receipt. You do not have to keep it for a minimum period in order to return it. There is no fee, and you don’t even have to box it up-a courier will come out and take care of it for you.

Casper also has solid warranty protection, offering a full 10-year warranty. Shipping is free.

The mattress is compressed into a standard shipping carton and is typically delivered within two to three business days. If you were to order a Casper mattress today, you would have it quickly.

Structure and Setup of the Casper Mattress

One of the most notable things about the current design of this mattress is that Casper added an extra layer of polyurethane foam in May 2016.

This was done to address complaints that the mattress’s top layer of latex foam was not thick enough, causing people to sink too far into the base layers. This update certainly helps, as it serves as a transitional layer, but it may not be quite enough.

Now, about the claim that this mattress is universally comfortable. As we stated before, that’s pushing it.

In actuality, this mattress is best suited for average sized people.

Casper Mattress

At the most, it comfortably supports one person up to 250 pounds or two people up to a combined weight of 450 pounds. Otherwise, even with the new layer, the mattress simply isn’t supportive enough. Side sleepers may also dislike this mattress, as that sleeping position creates pressure points that may not be alleviated by the foam layers.

Unlike many foam mattresses, this one doesn’t have a major issue with off-gassing. You shouldn’t have to worry about dealing with unpleasant odors in the days and weeks after it arrives, which is a huge plus. It also performs well in terms of heat, as the memory foam layer is beneath the top layer, adequately preventing the mattress from getting too hot when exposed to body heat. See other foam mattress reviews.

Movement transfer is minimal, so if you plan to sleep on this mattress with someone else, you shouldn’t have to worry about inadvertently disturbing them when getting in and out of bed.

The mattress is also very quiet, even when it is exposed to a lot of movement. Because it is a one-sided mattress, it can’t be flipped over. However, it should be rotated from time to time to keep it in better shape.

Let’s take a closer look at the design of the Casper mattress. It is made up of four layers:

Casper Mattress

Bottom Support Layer

The bottom-most layer is made up of supportive polyurethane foam that is five inches thick. This layer serves as the foundation of the mattress, giving it the support that it needs. It has a density of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot.

Supportive Foam Layer

The next layer up is also a layer of supportive foam. In this case, it is 1.5-inch-thick polyurethane foam. This is the new, transitional layer that was added back in May. It has a density of 2.5 PCF.

Memory Foam Layer

The second layer from the top is made out of 1.5-inch-thick memory foam. It is designed to provide pressure relief and extra support. At a density of 4 PCF, it does its job fairly well. Since it’s not at the very top, its heat-absorbing qualities don’t negatively affect sleep.

Top Latex Foam Layer

The topmost layer consists of 1.5 inches of synthetic Dunlop latex foam. This layer gives the mattress a nice amount of bounce and helps to keep you cool while you sleep. It has a density of 3.3 PCF.

How it Feels

There’s no way to know for sure how this mattress will feel to you until you get a chance to sleep on it. However, most people report that it hugs and contours the body well, and that it provides adequate support across most sleeping positions.

Casper Mattress

People who are of an average weight generally enjoy how this mattress feels, as it doesn’t sink down too much and manages to provide a good amount of support.

The big issue with this mattress, as mentioned elsewhere in this Casper mattress review, is that it misses the mark for larger folks. People who weigh 250 pounds or more tend to sink right through the top layers and can feel the foundation layer pretty well. This negatively affects the mattress’s ability to ease pressure points, so it can cause discomfort across all sleeping positions. It’s even worse for side sleepers-even those who weigh less.

Therefore, if you are a larger person, or if you like to sleep on your side, this mattress probably isn’t for you.

The edge support issue is also especially noticeable for larger people, who may feel like they are constantly at risk of rolling right off the mattress.

Customer Service

Casper has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Most negative reviews refer to the product itself and not to the customer service that is provided by the company, which is generally regarded as being among the best in the industry. It is also evidenced by Casper’s great return policy and generous warranty, which are also among the best.
