Disadvantage:

The primary disadvantage is that they still cause pressure on the body and therefore are not ideal for people with back problems and other sleep issues.

Memory Foam Mattresses


Memory foam mattresses exploded on the scene several years ago. Since then, they have become among the most popular types of mattresses on the market today.

Because they are made out of memory foam, which is slow-responding foam that contours well to the body while retaining its shape, memory foam mattresses are great for people who need lots of support without excessive firmness.

They are often mixed with some sort of gel for a cooler, more comfortable surface temperature.

Advantage:

The top advantage of memory foam mattresses is that they can be quite soft and comfortable while still delivering excellent support.

They offer exceptional motion separation, which means that you are unlikely to wake up your partner if you move around in bed at night. When you lie on a memory foam mattress, you’re unlikely to feel pressure at any point in your body.

Disadvantage:

Memory foam isn’t without its drawbacks. Early on, in particular, it was derided by many for its unfortunate thermal properties. Namely, memory foam tends to retain heat.

Bodies produce heat, of course, so traditional memory foam is sometimes too hot for some people. Luckily, memory foam has improved considerably. With the addition of gel and other materials, it is less likely to cause overheating but still offers all of the usual advantages. One other drawback to keep in mind is price, as memory foam tends to cost more than innerspring.

Latex Mattresses


Often lumped into the same category as memory foam, latex mattresses are made out of latex rubber, which brings many exciting benefits to the table.

More supportive and durable than memory foam, latex responds more quickly, which means that it doesn’t retain its shape for as long. It also naturally keeps a more neutral temperature.

Advantage:

The primary advantage of latex mattresses is that they offer exceptional support while still contouring to the body to some extent. They also naturally have a neutral temp, so you don’t have to worry about overheating.

Disadvantage:

The main drawback of latex mattresses is that they don’t relieve pressure quite as well as memory foam. They fall short in terms of motion separation too, and they tend to be pretty expensive.


Mattress Sizes

After deciding which type of mattress you want, figure out which size suits your needs the best. While price is obviously a consideration, the top priority here is selecting a size that gives you–and your partner, if applicable-enough space to stay comfy all night long.

Here’s a quick rundown of standard mattress sizes:

Twin – Also known as a single, it measures 38″ x 74″. XL twins, which are usually used in dorm rooms, measure 38″ x 80″.

Full – Also known as a double, it measures 54″ x 74″. If you are taller than 5’4″, this one is probably too small for you.
Queen – A standard queen-sized mattress measures 60″ x 80″, which gives each person about 30 inches of space

King – A standard king-sized mattress measures 76″ x 80″, which gives each person about 38 inches of space

California King – This exceptionally large mattress measures 72″ x 84″

Mattress Accessories

The right mattress accessories can make a major difference. If nothing else, buy a mattress cover, or mattress protector, to keep your mattress in like-new shape. Some styles are designed to keep out dust mites and other allergens, which is a major perk for those who suffer from allergies or respiratory ailments.

Mattress pads, or toppers, are excellent accessories as well. That’s especially true if you aren’t completely happy with your mattress.

Perhaps the mattress reviews exaggerates how soft it was, for example. Purchase a thick mattress topper to compensate for this. Toppers are available in many thicknesses and materials, including memory foam, latex, wool and down.

 


How to Pick the Right Firmness

Mattress firmness is largely subjective. What is described as “soft” in mattress reviews may feel anything but to some people.

However, mattresses generally fall into one of the three firmness categories: firm, or very firm; medium firm; and soft, or plush.

On a scale of one to 10, with one being the softest and 10 being the firmest, mattresses that are rated between 5 and 7 are considered to offer “universal comfort, which means that they appeal to the largest percentage of people. The typical mattress reviews may mention that the mattress in question offers universal comfort, and this is what they mean.

Otherwise, mattresses that fall between 3 and 5 are considered soft, and they tend to sink in 1.5 to 3 inches when you lie on them.

Mattresses that fall between 6 and 7 are considered medium firm, and they sink 1 to 2 inches when you lie on them. Finally, mattresses that fall between 7.5 and 9 on the scale are considered firm, and they sink an inch or less when you lie on them.

Side sleeper

If you’re a side sleeper, a soft or medium-firm mattress is generally best.

Stomach sleeper

Stomach sleepers do best on medium-firm to firm mattresses.

Back sleeper

Back sleepers are generally better off with moderately soft to medium firm mattresses.



When Should I Buy a New Mattress?

Since it’s a fairly big investment, you don’t want to buy a new mattress prematurely. How can you tell when a new one is in order?

Even the best mattress in the world isn’t designed to last forever.

On average, the typical mattress lasts around seven years.

 

A few signs that it may be time to buy a new mattress include:

1. You routinely wake up feeling achy, tired and as if you got little or no sleep

2. The mattress is exhibiting signs of age; it’s lumpy, saggy or otherwise worn out

3. You tend to sleep much better when you are away from home

The older you get, the more frequently you may need to replace your mattresses, as your back may be more sensitive to wear and tear on a mattress. After 40, plan on replacing your mattress every five to seven years.
